Occupation Description

Manufacturers need to have materials and components delivered to their facilities at specific times in order to maintain production schedules and outputs. They also need their finished products to be delivered to clients, nationally and internationally, on time. This is the responsibility of the logistics and transport teams. Logistics and transport administrators plan, organise and control the operational activities in the four principal types of transport, road, rail, air and sea.

Logistics and transport administrators may…

  • oversee all facets of an organisation's transport and logistics needs
  • coordinate transport and related staff
  • devise or approve methods and procedures for operating freight services, time schedules and routes
  • review freight rate structures
  • help to develop transport operating policy
  • The logistics and transport administrator's role is becoming increasingly specialised and sophisticated. They need a thorough understanding of the transport industry and a knowledge of how the four principal types of transport interact.

  • possess good managerial and organisational skills
  • be able to work under pressure
  • possess good communication skills
  • Environment

    The majority of work for those involved in logistics and transport administration will usually be in an office environment, however there may be times in certain manufacturing enterprises where they will also need to attend meetings offsite or visit the factory floor.

    Training

    To become a logistics or transport administrator you usually have to complete a Certificate IV in Transport and Distribution (Administration). To work at more senior levels, involving more responsibility, you will usually need to complete a Diploma or Advanced Diploma in Logistics - Business Management or a Degree.

    Of course, with experience, and possibly further training, you can continue to progress further along a career pathway that could see you in a number of senior management positions.
