Occupation Description

Engineering managers plan, administer and review the engineering and technical operations of manufacturing engineering operations.

Engineering managers may…

  • direct the formulation of engineering strategies, policies and plans
  • ensure engineering standards of quality, cost, safety, timeliness and performance are met
  • interpret plans, drawings and specifications and provide advice on engineering methods and procedures to achieve construction and production requirements
  • consult with marketing, research and manufacturing managers concerning engineering aspects of new construction and product design
  • develop and implement into place project and work schedules and budgets
  • ensure that there is conformity with specifications and plans and with laws, regulations and safety standards
  • oversee maintenance requirements to optimise efficiency
  • coordinate the activities of engineering staff and control engineering staff selection and training
  • contribute to research and development projects

    Although engineering managers may spend many hours in the office, they are also required to spend time on site supervising progress.

    Training

    To become an engineering manager, you usually have to complete a Degree.

    Graduates may be eligible for membership of the Association of Professional Engineers, Scientists and Managers, Australia and-or the Institution of Engineers, Australia.

    Of course, with experience, and possibly further training, you can continue to progress further along a career pathway that could see you in a number of senior management positions.
