Occupation Description

Early stage wool processing prepares raw wool for use by textile manufacturers. Before it can be used raw wool requires scouring, carding, combing and spinning before it is processed into woven, knitted or spun fabrics.

    Early stage wool processing takes place in a large factory environment and can be both mechanical and physical.

    Training

    You can sometimes work in early stage wool processing without undertaking any formal training or qualifications however some employers will prefer that you do. To work as an operator you will usually require a Certificate II in Textile Production (Complex or Multiple Processes), and a leading hand will need Certificate III in Textile Production.

    With experience, and possibly some further training, early stage wool processing workers can become supervisors or training officers. A Diploma of Applied Fashion Design and Technology will enable you to work in occupations such as Senior Patternmaker, and of course, with further training and experience you can continue to progress along a career pathway that could see you in many senior management positions.
