Footwear Repairer Make IT - Qualifications

Occupation Description

Footwear repairers repair shoes, boots and other leather goods according to customer requirements.

Footwear repairers may…

  • choose ready-made new soles or cut them from pieces of leather, rubber or nylon, and cement, nail or sew the soles to the shoes using a power-operated sole-stitcher or a manually operated sewing machine
  • replace heels by cutting replacement heels into shape and cementing or nailing them into place by machine or by hand
  • stain and polish repaired shoes to match the original colour
  • replace insoles and toe-caps, re-stitch loose seams, replace bows and ribbons, and re-colour and polish shoes
  • do repairs such as replacing zips on handbags and luggage
  • cut keys and do engraving
  • manage other staff and do the banking and accounts
  • if highly skilled, make surgical adjustments such as building up soles and heels or adapting footwear according to doctors' prescriptions.

  • be free from allergies to such things as glues, solvents and polishes
  • have good hand-eye coordination
  • be able to work quickly and accurately
  • Environment

    Footwear repairers often work for themselves at home or in a small business, however some might work for a small to medium business such as franchised shoe repair outlets. Some choose to start their own business . Business success in footwear, like all enterprises, depends as much on sales skills and customer service as on craft skills, and therefore some business skills training might be of benefit. There can also be considerable costs involved.

    Training

    You can, in some circumstances, work as a footwear repairer without undertaking any formal training or qualifications however some employers will prefer that you do. To work as a footwear repair operator you will usually require a Certificate II in Footwear Production.

    With experience, and possibly some further training, footwear repair operators may become a footwear repair tradesperson. This will usually require a Certificate III in Footwear Production.

    The skills and knowledge of footwear repairers is very similar to that of footwear producers.

    Of course you can work at even higher levels within this occupation and sector, and with further training and experience you can continue to progress along a career pathway that could see you progress to occupations such as junior or senior patternmaker, designer or production manager and a number of senior management position.
