Interior Decorator / Designer Make IT - Qualifications

Occupation Description

Interior decorators - designers plan and implement decoration schemes for homes, offices, shops and professional rooms.

Interior decorators - designers may…

  • advise clients on the selection of colour schemes, layout, lighting, furniture, floor coverings, curtains, paint, wallpaper and hardware products (e.g. curtain fittings, door and drawer handles)
  • visit clients' premises to look at existing conditions and make measurements
  • provide sketch designs, specifications and cost estimates to the client for approval
  • supervise and coordinate the installation and arrangement of furniture and furnishings
  • undertake direct selling if working in a retail shop.

  • have good communication and ‘people' skills
  • Interior decorators - designers work as retail decorator consultants, freelance decorators, consultants and managers with large department outlets, architectural support staff and colour scheme coordinators. Some experienced decorators establish their own businesses. Business success in interior decorating - designing, like all enterprises, depends as much on sales skills and customer service as on craft skills, and therefore some business skills training might be of benefit. There can also be considerable costs involved.

    Training

    You can work as an interior decorator - designer without formal qualifications. You will probably get some informal training on the job. However, entry to this occupation may be improved if you have qualifications. A Certificate III in Interior Decoration (Client Services) may provide a good starting point, and a Certificate IV in Interior Decoration and Design, a Diploma of Interior Decoration and Interior Design, or an Advanced Diploma of Interior Design may be more attractive to a prospective employer.
