Bed Maker Make IT - Qualifications

Occupation Description

Bed makers cut, shape and fit together the timber and other component parts that go to make bed and mattress. These parts may include the bedhead, the foot, slats, legs, springs, foam rubber and textiles.

Bed makers may…

  • work out job requirements from drawings, templates and written instructions
  • set up jigs, select timber, and cut to size and shape
  • cut joints, using wood-cutting machines or hand-powered tools
  • assemble prepared wood to form the bed base
  • trim and glue joints and fit parts together using clamps, nails, dowels and screws
  • Picture framers use a variety of tools including power tools, saws and pneumatic staplers and nailers.

    Personal Requirements

    You should

  • enjoy practical and manual work
  • have good hand-eye coordination
  • have good eyesight
  • possess some basic mathematics ability
  • be able to work as part of a team
  • Environment

    Bed makers work in workshops that may be a little noisy, especially when machines or tools are being operated. The work may also involve a degree of standing and bending.

    Training

    You can sometimes work as a mattress and base making process worker without undertaking any formal training or qualifications however some employers will prefer that you do. To work as a mattress and base making process worker you will usually require a Certificate II in Mattress and Base Making .

    With experience, and possibly some further training, floor finishing and covering worker s can become a mattress and base making tradesperson. This will usually require a Certificate III in Mattress and Base Making .

    Of course you can work at even higher levels within this occupation and sector, and with further training and experience you can continue to progress along a career pathway that could see you move into occupations such as design or production supervisor ( Certificate IV in Furnishing Technology or a Diploma of Furnishing Technology ) and even end up in a senior management position.
