Training Package: Furnishing

This qualification is designed to prepare people for occupations such as upholstery tradesperson working in the furnishing or marine sectors. It is for people (including possible apprentices) wanting to acquire the skills and knowledge to work in the upholstery sector of the furnishing industry. Students will learn how to select fabric, apply contemporary and traditional upholstery techniques, machine sew, cut and apply fabric and leather, manufacture loose covers and cushions, prepare cutting lists, cost and estimate work, interpret documentation and dismantle/reassemble furniture. They will also learn about occupational health and safety, calculations, communications and working with others.

Certificates III and IV recognise more complex vocational skills and knowledge that meet nationally endorsed industry/enterprise competency standards as agreed for those qualifications by the relevant industry, enterprise, community or professional group. They include training at the apprenticeship level, as well as more advanced skills in: literacy and numeracy; communication skills; workplace technology; and industry specific competencies. VET qualifications are offered by TAFE Institutes, private providers and some universities.
