This qualification is the entry level for musical instrument making and repair work. The qualification allows for skills to be developed in the making and repair of traditional wood based musical instruments such as violins, violas, cellos and guitars as well as electives covering percussion, electric and brass instruments. The qualification covers the precision use of tools, machines and materials including for the manufacture of one-off products or prototypes Besides covering specialist musical instrument making and repair skills, a range of traditional furniture skills are included where relevant. Examples of these skills include applying stains, fillers and bleach and hand application of surface finishes.
