Training Package: Metal and Engineering

This qualification is designed to prepare people to work as engineering fabrication tradespersons. It is for people employed across a wide range of manufacturing areas, such as casting and moulding, cast metals fabrication, heavy fabrication (boilermaking), tool and die setting, light fabrication (sheetmetal), engineering fabrication maintenance, engineering patternmaking, blacksmithing, surface finishing and welding. Students will learn the competencies required to work as a fabrication tradesperson in these areas. Students will acquire skills and knowledge in workplace communication, occupational health and safety, quality procedures systems and planning, engineering measurement, computations and computer technology plus industry-specific skills relevant to their current or intended employment.

Certificates III and IV recognise more complex vocational skills and knowledge that meet nationally endorsed industry/enterprise competency standards as agreed for those qualifications by the relevant industry, enterprise, community or professional group. They include training at the apprenticeship level, as well as more advanced skills in: literacy and numeracy; communication skills; workplace technology; and industry specific competencies. VET qualifications are offered by TAFE Institutes, private providers and some universities.
