Leather Goods Producer Make IT - Qualifications

Occupation Description

Leather goods producers manufacture and repair leather products such as handbags, wallets, gloves, belts, harnesses and saddles and other saddlery (horse riding equipment). Some leather goods producers specialise in saddles and saddlery, harnesses and horse blankets, footwear, hats, clothing, upholstery or other specialty leather goods.

Leather goods producers may…

  • select suitable types and grades of leather
  • draw patterns
  • cut leather to size and shape (using special cutting machines called 'clicking' and 'skiving' machines)
  • join leather pieces together using rivets, needles and threads or adhesives
  • stuff saddles and collars with hair or flock
  • attach buckles, eyelets and metal decorations
  • emboss decorative patterns
  • finish products with stain, dye, polish or coats of lacquer
  • repair damaged goods
  • Personal Requirements

    You should

  • enjoy practical and manual work
  • have good hand-eye coordination
  • be able to perform detailed work
  • Environment

    Leather goods producers will often work for themselves in a small business environment or be employed by leather companies, saddle makers, pastoral companies or craft workshops. Some experienced leather goods producers choose to start their own business . Business success in leather goods production, like all enterprises, depends as much on sales skills and customer service as on craft skills and might benefit from some business skills training. There can also be considerable costs involved.

    Training

    You can, in some circumstances, work as a leather goods producer without undertaking any formal training or qualifications however some employers will prefer that you do. To work as a leather goods producer (cutter, table worker, machinist) you will usually require a Certificate II in Leather Goods Production.

    With experience, and possibly some further training, leather goods producers may work in a production management capacity and become a leading hand tradesperson. This will usually require a Certificate III in Textile Production.

    Of course you can work at even higher levels within this occupation and sector, and with further training and experience you can continue to progress along a career pathway that could see you progress to occupations such supervisor, leather grader, leather technologist and also a number of senior management positions.
