| Hide, Skin, Leather Processor
Occupation Description Hide, skin, leather processing prepares leather (and other skins) for use in sectors such as leather goods production and footwear production. Hides and skins are generally soaked, limed, pickled and tanned before they can become high quality leather. It may also undergo then undergo surface coating. Occupations in hide, skin, leather processing include operators, leading hands, supervisors and trainers, and leather technologists. Personal Requirements You should… Environment Hide, skin, leather processing takes place in tanneries, usually a large factory environment, and the work is both mechanical and physical. Training You can sometimes work in hide, skin and leather processing without undertaking any formal training or qualifications however some employers will prefer that you do. To work as a production worker you will usually require a Certificate II in Leather Goods Production, and an operator or leading hand will need a Certificate III in Leather Production. Of course, with further experience and training (Certificate IV in Textile Technology and Production, Diploma of Applied Fashion Design and Technology) you might work in occupations such as Hide, Skin and Leather Technologist or Production Manager, and you can continue to progress along a career pathway that could see you in many senior management positions.
