Mechatronics/Robotics Technician Make IT - Qualifications

Occupation Description

Mechatronics and robotics technicians are specialist advanced trade-technician workers. Mechatronics combines mechanical, electronic and computer technologies to create automated, ‘intelligent' machinery and robotics that improve the efficiency, safety and productivity of manufacturing (and other) processes. Mechatronics and robotics technicians will usually assist design, development and engineering staff, as well as working closely with mechatronics tradespersons to install, maintain, modify and repair mechatronic systems, equipment and component parts.

Mechatronics and robotics technicians may…

  • fit and assemble parts and sub-assemblies made from mechanical and electrical - electronic and computer components
  • manufacture, install, modify, repair and fault-find hydraulic and pneumatic equipment and systems
  • inspect machinery and make repairs
  • erect machinery and equipment on site
  • Mechatronics and robotics technicians may…

  • examine detailed drawings or specifications to find out job, material and equipment requirements
  • set up and adjust machines and equipment
  • operate machines to produce parts and components
  • fit and assemble metal parts, tools or sub-assemblies, including the welding or brazing of parts
  • cut, thread, bend and install hydraulic and pneumatic pipes and lines
  • dismantle faulty tools and assemblies and repair or replace defective parts
  • set up and-or operate hand and machine tools, welding equipment or computer numerically controlled (CNC) machines
  • check accuracy and quality of finished parts, tools or sub-assemblies.
  • Personal Requirements

    You should

Most mechatronics and robotics technicians usually work in workshops or production areas that can be noisy, and - or hot and - or dusty. They may spend most of their day standing and often need to bend, crouch or climb. They may also spend time in workshops - laboratories developing and testing. Mechatronics and robotics technicians must be aware of safety regulations and wear protective equipment (for example, ear muffs, eye and other body protection to minimise the risk of injury in the workplace).

    Training

To work as a mechatronics-robotics technician you will usually require a Certificate III in Manufacturing Technology.

With further study and experience, competent mechatronics-robotics technicians can upgrade their qualifications and work as a supervisor or draftsperson ( Certificate IV in Manufacturing Technology ). Further steps include occupations such as CNC robotic cell designer, mechatronics technician, systems, mechatronics or CAM (computer aided machine) designer ( Diploma of Engineering (Technical ), and engineering associate or para-professional (Advanced Diploma of Engineering). It is always possible that you can end up in a number of senior management positions.
